"WHAT IS VG-10 DAMASCUS STEEL?" An outgrowth of laminated or piled steel, this technique combines steels of different carbon contents to provide a desired mix of hardness and toughness. The laminating process, in which different types of steel together produce patterns visible on the finished blade, forms the basis for pattern welding. There is a VG-10 steel core forged with 33 layers of Damascus steel on either side, undergoing high-temperature heat treatment and ice forging to make it exotic and gorgeous. Damascus steel knives are stronger than their historic counterparts, with less impurities and homogenous layers. The blade edge can reach HRC 60±2 (Rockwell Hardness Scale).

"HOW TO RECOGNIZE REAL AND FAKE DAMASCUS?" Regular stainless steel with no layering can be passed off as Damascus by laser printing a design on the blade, which is easy to spot as the pattern could rub off. Real Damascus is intrinsic to the steel itself, while fake Damascus is only a facade. You can use sandpaper to get a satin look, then etch it with ferric chloride or muriatic acid - if the Damascus pattern comes back, it's real.
